Prime Number Birthday

Filed under: All Posts — Wrote by Scott on Tuesday, August 31st, 2010 @ 11:41 pm

My birthday consisted of pretty much constant trouble at work for some reason. I still managed to get home at a somewhat decent hour though and the princess ambushed me as I got through the door. Granted 99% of the reason was that she was dying to blow out birthday candles (I had promised her I would let her do it for me). She was strung up so high it was hilarious.

Mr. Lorne the vocalist is back in town which means we get to hit the studio again starting tomorrow. Probably good too — I’ve been going into withdraw not getting to play recently. Got to have our outlets right?

Thanks to everyone for all the kind birthday messages by the way — I was really overwhelmed with how many people dropped me a line this year.

Inception

Went to go see Inception with the wifey today. Before lunch time as always. That’s the way it goes with kids — the few “dates” we manage get shifted up by hours because that’s pretty much the only time the kids will be in school, can be put in daycare, etc. Not that I’m complaining though — every thing is much cheaper and super empty. We hit up the HUMAX theater in Shibuya and it was virtually desolate. Most of the time you can’t even make a reservation there.

Anyhow, I really liked the movie a lot. Didn’t “make me think” so much as a lot of reviews and comments seemed to suggest, but it was definitely entertaining. And the effects were of course stunning.

Speaking of entertaining, I just finished with Stephen King’s “The Waste Lands.” It’s got a fantastic flow to it. Stephen King is amazing like that though; even his worst books are entertaining to read on some level.

By the way, just in case everyone forgot or didn’t know, I’m going to be a year older on Tuesday. Well, technically four days older (if you are considering now as the reference point). And technically it will be on Wednesday if you live around North America.

Got it?

I hope so, because I sure don’t.

Duel Reading

Just got back from my former bosses house. A few of us got together for a BBQ and watching what will probably be the last of the summer fireworks here. It’s pretty awesome really — fireworks have came so far since I was a kid. And there must be just a ridiculous amount of money they pump into these celebrations every year. Honestly amazing.

I’ve been reading both “The Waste Lands” (The Dark Tower III by Stephen King) and “Bushido: The Soul of Japan” (Inazo Nitobe) simultaneously for some reason or another. The latter I found for free on the iBooks application on my iPhone and I figured I would give it a shot considering I have always wanted to read it. Reading on the iPhone does have its positive points (i.e. you don’t have to carry a book around and it’s much easier to read on the trains), but it still feels a bit funny to me. I just like the physical presence of books I suppose. And I’m sure the newer generations are going to be all over that shit and I’m going to essentially be like those old guys who just for no good reason, prefer typewriters to computers.

But that’s ok though. It’s even kind of nice in a way I suppose.

Reasons I Love Japan (#2)

Filed under: All Posts — Wrote by Scott on Monday, August 16th, 2010 @ 9:28 pm

It was late at work today and I was rubbing my eyes. One of my coworkers came by and asked me if they were dry. I said yeah and she responded…

“I would assume that happens commonly considering HOW BIG THEY ARE.”

Happy birthday princess!

iPhone

I just got myself the new iPhone, which I hope means I will be updating this site and my twitter account a lot more now. We will see though. Finished reading “The Art of War” by Sun Tzu and started on Marx and Engels’ “The Communist Manifesto” — you know, being that I just finished “The Wealth of Nations” it’s pretty much a compulsory read. I’m thinking I’ll go back to more fun stuff after that. I got three books from the Dark Tower series waiting.

By the way, our show last night was pretty darn good I think. I had a hell of a lot of fun anyway. Can’t wait to see the video believe it or not (that’s a rarity for me).

Okinawa

Filed under: All Posts — Wrote by Scott on Saturday, July 24th, 2010 @ 11:56 pm

Just got back from a trip to Okinawa with the family. The beaches were utterly gorgeous. It was kind of a shame though because it ended up raining most of the trip.

For the most part we just hung out at the beach all day. We also did manage to take a trip to Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, which was just down right fantastic. I have to admit though, the dolphin show they do here in Tokyo at the Shinagawa aquarium might give it a run for its money (ignoring the fact that the rest of the aquarium here absolutely sucks ass).

Photos are here.

I just got through reading “Japanese Government Bond Futures” by Hiroyuki Kubota. It’s marketed as an “introductory” book but it sure as hell doesn’t read like one. Reading it in Japanese didn’t help either though I expect.

Speaking of, I was in the train the other day and this foreign guy (apparently he was a trader) sat down next to me and commented that if I wanted to really get good knowledge on the subject, I should stick to reading the foreign published books, being that most of the world is “way ahead” of Japan when it comes to derivatives trading. While I certainly see his point, I couldn’t bring myself to point out the fact that the book was about JGB (Japanese Government Bond) Futures  — and um, there isn’t a hell of a lot of good literature focusing on that in English for obvious reasons.

So anyhow, “The Art of War” by Sun Tzu is next on my list.

Cause I need to learn how to kill people more efficiently.

In other good news, I apparently have found some permanent work now (note I was on contract before but I can’t remember if I mentioned it here or not). So yeah… fuck you bad economy.

I’m really happy I can say that now.
